Hello from us all at The Ritz. The summer season is upon us again. Lots of blockbusters on of course, but I thought I’d concentrate on some of the other films coming soon.
Firstly, ace director Kenneth Branagh, better known for his film version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Shakespearean interpretations, gives us his computer-assisted fantasy action movie Thor. It is based on an ancient Norse legend, the one-and-only Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman and newcomer Chris Hemsworth star.
Set in ancient Japan, 13 Assassins tells the story of a suicide mission to kill an evil lord. There is lots of spectacular Kung-Fu type action in this one.
Staying with assassins, we come to Hanna. A friend of mine saw this and she tells me it’s very good. Hanna is a 16-year-old girl trained by her father to be the perfect assassin. Set in Europe, it stars Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett.
In a lighter mood, remember The Hangover? Well, the boys are back with The Hangover Part II. The lads travel to Bangkok for Stu’s wedding… oh dear!! More post-blackout misadventures must follow.
A more serious film – The Way – follows an American father on a journey to recover the body of his son who died while on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Father and son Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen are director and star.
Win Win is an American indie which looks good fun.
All the summer “biggies” will be with us; Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and the final instalment in the Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

The View from the Projection Box with Ritz Cinema projectionist Paul Winfield
Well here we are again, well into another year already and lots of films on their way to The Ritz. So without further ado, let’s go!
Now I’m sure, like me, many of you will remember a rather disturbing news story which hit the headlines in May 2003. Aron Ralston was trekking alone in the Utah Mountains when he fell into a crevice and became trapped by a boulder which landed on his arm. To save his own life he resorted to very extreme measures. Now Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle has filmed Ralston’s remarkable story. I’ve seen a preview and let me tell you, this may not be for the squeamish but it is gripping cinema and not to be missed. Look out for 127 Hours.
Javier Bardem is a Ritz favourite and his new film Biutiful (no the spelling is not wrong) has him playing a man in free fall, on the road to redemption. Again, I’ve seen a preview and it’s a dark, gritty drama. Bardem has already been tipped for an Oscar for his role as a man searching to forgive, for love and forever.
I’ve seen a little bit of this one as well - Black Swan - it looks beautiful. While vying for the lead roles in a production of Swan Lake, a veteran ballerina enters into a twisted friendship with a new dancer. Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder and Mila Kunis star and of course, there is great music.
I mentioned these next three films last time and they are coming soon:-
Never Let Me Go. Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield play Ruth, Kathy and Tommy. After a seemingly idyllic childhood, as young adults they have to come to terms with the love they feel for each other and a haunting reality that awaits them.
The Coen Brothers’ True Grit is unmissable!
Gulliver’s Travels looks good fun. Also keep an eye open for these…
Of Gods and Men, Somewhere, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. All of these will be with us soon.

I hear there’s a big football tournament this summer, but for those of you who want to escape the big screen TVs, there are some cracking films coming to our really big screen. A definite antidote to the World Cup will be the return of the girls in Sex and the City II. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis are all back in this sequel with writer/producer/director Michael Patrick King.
For those who like adventures of a different kind, the latest reincarnation of Robin Hood is with us soon. This time the legendary hero is played by Russell Crowe. Only a few weeks ago we played the original version as our Sunday Classic Film, with Errol Flynn donning the green tights. To me that will always be the Robin Hood, but the new one looks to be a great action movie and a lot of the location was done here in Derbyshire.
Despite its rather morbid title, Cemetery Junction is a 1970s set comedy centred on three upstart professional men working at an insurance company. Ralph Fiennes stars alongside Ricky Gervais who also directs.
Now we come to Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Some of you may remember the 1992 version, set in New York. This time the action moves south to steamy post-Katrina New Orleans, where a drug and gambling addicted detective is investigating the killing of five Senegalese immigrants. For those of you who like dark and gripping drama this is a must-see and the soundtrack music is really cool.
Looking a little further into the summer months, there’s a new Shrek movie and Woody, Buzz and the rest of the Toy Box friends return in Toy Story 3. And, wait for it, there’s a new big screen version of the 1980s hit The A Team.
So, there’s plenty of choice for all tastes at The Ritz. Looking forward to seeing you.

The View from the Projection Box with Ritz Cinema projectionist Paul Winfield
How wonderful it was to see Carey Mulligan pick up Best Actress award at the Baftas in her first film An Education. If she goes on to win an Oscar as well, it will be truly stunning. Be sure a golden future in cinema is already assured.
Of course, the really big award ceremony – The Ritzys – are taking place in June! It’s our third Ritzy Awards Night; the members’ votes are being counted, and a very special night on the red carpet will be enjoyed by our special guests and the lucky members picked at random.
So, onto the films coming to The Ritz. Originally scheduled for release last year, the latest film from director Martin Scorsese – Shutter Island – reaches our screens this spring with an impressive cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley. Shutter Island is a psychological horror-thriller set in 1950s America.
I Love you Phillip Morris has already caused controversy in the States. It brings together Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in a true story of life, love and prison breaks.
Emma Thompson repeats her 2005 role as Nanny McPhee, the nanny played by Maggie Gyllenhaal who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war.
The versatile and lovely Sandra Bullock, who’s up for Best Actress Oscar, stars in The Blind Side – the story of a middle class family who take in a homeless teenager who has run away from a broken home and help him to realise his dream of becoming an all-American football player.
The Easter holidays fall in the period I’m looking at and all the family should be well catered for at The Ritz with the new Alice in Wonderland, Disney’s Princess and the Frog, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief.
Well, hopefully once again there is something for everyone at The Ritz.

Once again, thanks to you all. We’ve had another successful year at The Ritz. Despite the recession you kept on coming to see us and enjoy the best in-cinema entertainment. We must be doing something right.
2010 gets off to a great start with big names to the fore. The one and only Helen Mirren stars in The Station, and friend of The Ritz - Colin Farrell - is A Single Man.
The Lovely Bones directed by Peter Jackson, stars the beautiful Rachel Weisz. Young girl Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) is brutally attacked and murdered, then watches from heaven as her parents drift apart. Her father becomes obsessed with revenge and her sister grows into the woman she can never be.
A Tim Burton film is always an event, whether you like his style or not. Personally, I’m not a fan, but his take on Alice in Wonderland should be interesting – and what a cast: Michael Sheen, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry and Johnny Depp. Beat that!!
In recent times The Walt Disney Studio and its association with Pixar have produced many wonderful state-of-the-art digital animations, but Disney has returned to its roots for The Princess and the Frog, a traditional fairytale for all the family, centred on the adventures of a young girl named Princess Tiana who lives in the New Orleans French Quarter during the Jazz Age. I’ve seen clips from this and it really does look lovely, plus there is a great soundtrack. Kids and grown-ups will love this one.
In the next issue of All Things Local, I’ll look at the mega films later in the year, and also give you news of the 2010 Ritzy Awards. There is a similar event in America. I think it’s called The Oscars, or something like that.

The weather pundits are predicting a heat wave summer but as I sit here looking through the window at a slate grey sky and pouring rain it seems a long way off! I'm sure it will arrive and with it comes this year's crop of summer blockbuster films. More about those later, but first...
As a special treat this summer why not book The Ritz for a Sunday afternoon soiree? Every Sunday in July and August we are offering you the chance to watch a film of your choice. For just £150 you will get all the luxury seats and sofas (that's 26 seats in total).

One I'm looking forward to is Ice Age: Dawn of the DInosaurs - I've seen bits of it and it's really funny, a film for everyone in he family.
Two megastars; Johnny Depp and Christian Bale come together in Public Enemies - a 1930's gangster film brought up to date by director Michael Mann.
At last, after months of delay, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince will be with us this summer and the war against Voldermort is not going well.
Finally looking into the Autumn and I can't wait - a new film at last from Quentin Tarantino - Inglorious Basterds. I can't tell you much about it but Brad Pitt stars in a story of a hit squad of Jewish American soldiers operating in occupied Europe at he end of the 2nd World War.
Such a lot to look forward to.

News from the Projection Box - Ritz Cinema, Belper

How good is that? Despite all the crunch, recession, downturn or whatever they call it, the British film industry goes from strength to strength with our films collecting arms full of awards at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and the Oscars. Remember though that it's not just the stars and directors who deserve our applause, hundreds of back room people make British film great and we lead the world in special effects and technology.
Of course Hollywood and the rest of the world are waiting for the really big awards of 2009 - "The Ritzys" - when our very own red carpet will be rolled out again on 6th June to celebrate another great year in the industry.
Now the big films coming up....
A new Clint Eastwood film is always an event, whether or not he's in front of the camera or behind the camera. In this case it's both - Gran Torino sees Clint as Walt Kowalski, a Korean war veteran who sets out to reform his teenage neighbour who tried to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino car, nice to see Clint with a rifle in his hands again.
Old Big 'Ed is back! The Damned United looks at Brian Clough's 44 day reign as manager of Leeds United - I remember it well, there was nothing else on the back pages of the press for weeks so this will be a big one for us.... book early! A strong British cast include MIchael Sheen aka Tony Blair and David Frost.
State of Play is a big screen version of the BBC mini-series of the same name. A team of investigating reporters and a police detective try to solve he murder of a US congressman's mistress; Russell Crowe stars.
There's so many good films around this year - come to The Ritz and see them all. Next issue of All Things Local, I'll look forward to the summer blockbuster season.

With all the doom and gloom on the TV and the newspapers full of credit crunch mania, what better than to put on your coat and come to The Ritz and escape into the wonderful world of cinema? That's better - a wine and a nice piece of cake and some great films are coming to chase the blues away.
Already tipped for awards, the lovely Kate Winslet stars in The Reader a dark tale set in post war Germany when a young man's obsession with an older women runs headlong into a war crimes trial, where he learns an awful truth. Staying with WWll, Tom Cruise heads a strong cast in Valkyrie a thriller based on actual events.
Mid-February sees half-term and Inkheart which we think will be popular with our younger customers. Looking further ahead and one of my favourites Kate Blanchett stars with Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button the story of a man who starts aging backwards (I wish!) with bizarre consequences.
Set during the mid 1950's in a Connecticut suburb Revolutionary Road centres on a young couple coming to terms with personal problems and trying to raise their two young children.
Also coming soon is a new Woody Allen film Vicky Christina Barcelona and Young Victoria, a dramatisation of the turbulent first ears of Queen Victoria's reign and her romance with Prince Albert.
So once again, we hope there's something for everyone and we look forward to seeing you at The Ritz.

What's on at the Belper Ritz
The View from the Projection Box with Ritz Cinema (Belper) projectionist Paul Winfield...
Just a year ago when I was writing the first of these features for All Things Local, it was great to report that over 50,000 people had visited The Ritz. Now with the latest figures I have show that the success has continued with over 100,000 admissions since we opened - so from all of us at The Ritz - a big, big "thank you".
What a year 2008 has been. Here are just a few personal memories:
The first 'Ritzy Awards' in June, our own version of The Oscars, when the red carpet and our guests arriving in evening dress brought a little bit of Leicester Square to King Street, Belper. I also remember my hangover the following day - but that's another story! We were amazed that so many of our 'Ritzy' award winners emailed us from around the world saying they would visit The Ritz when they were next filming in the UK. There were people singing and dancing in the aisles during the run of Mamma Mia! Just the other week, the audience were leaving the cinema stunned into silence after watching the last few minutes of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
So what can we look forward to in 2009? Well a few films caught my eye. FIrstly, Valkyre, a thriller based on actual events as German generals hatch a plot to assassinate Hitler at the height of WWll, Tom Cruise stars.
A new Woody Allen film is always an event and Vicky Christina Barcelona, a romantic comedy set in Spain stars Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz. Spring and early summer sees the start of the blockbuster season with Star Trek Xl; Ben Stiller returns in Night at the Museum 2. There's a new Terminator film - Christian Bale stars as John Connor in Terminator Salvation.
There's also Ice Age lll and the much delayed Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince along with our usual mix of other films. We hope there's something for everyone.
So from Amanda & Neil, Catherine, myself and all The Ritz boys and girls - have a safe and happy Christmas and a great 2009.
Just a year ago when I was writing the first of these features for All Things Local, it was great to report that over 50,000 people had visited The Ritz. Now with the latest figures I have show that the success has continued with over 100,000 admissions since we opened - so from all of us at The Ritz - a big, big "thank you".
What a year 2008 has been. Here are just a few personal memories:
The first 'Ritzy Awards' in June, our own version of The Oscars, when the red carpet and our guests arriving in evening dress brought a little bit of Leicester Square to King Street, Belper. I also remember my hangover the following day - but that's another story! We were amazed that so many of our 'Ritzy' award winners emailed us from around the world saying they would visit The Ritz when they were next filming in the UK. There were people singing and dancing in the aisles during the run of Mamma Mia! Just the other week, the audience were leaving the cinema stunned into silence after watching the last few minutes of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
So what can we look forward to in 2009? Well a few films caught my eye. FIrstly, Valkyre, a thriller based on actual events as German generals hatch a plot to assassinate Hitler at the height of WWll, Tom Cruise stars.
A new Woody Allen film is always an event and Vicky Christina Barcelona, a romantic comedy set in Spain stars Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz. Spring and early summer sees the start of the blockbuster season with Star Trek Xl; Ben Stiller returns in Night at the Museum 2. Issue 8 of All Things Local is now out
We just wanted to update you with the latest news from All Things Local - the community magazine for the Kilburn and Belper area, Derbyshire.
Issue 8 - (August / September 2008) is now being added to the website.
All the regular features and columns are now updated with previous issues archived for instant viewing.
We're just waiting for the issue disc from the Printers to add the whole of Issue 8 to the website.
In the meantime, check out the last Sam's column as Sam leaves school - we wish him well on his journey through life - and our people in the news features local Belper cinema - Ritz Cinema - projectionist with his news of the big summer films for the holidays as well as a locally filmed epic starring Keira Knightley.
Well we'll be back with other columns that don't have a regular column slot on the website soon.

We have some great films coming to The Ritz. But first let me make you an offer you can't refuse, because for two performances only we have one of the greatest films ever made, The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola's epic mafia family saga.
If you've only ever seen it on TV or DVD take this chance to see it as the Director intended on our big panavision screen.
Filmed on location in Australia, Nims Island is a warm-hearted family comedy set on a magical island ruled by a young girl's imagination - Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin star.
Dennis Quaid stars in erudite comedy Smart People along with Sarah Jessica Parker - more about Sarah later.....
